2024 Broadway SAL C - Design Insights

Updated: Feb 14

So we actually had a lot of trouble with this one because there were so many things we could have done. Of course we had to do planes, which, fun fact, because of this musical I have drawn more planes than were delayed there. So many airplanes.

Anyway this one has the big plane, but also some little ones, so more can be added to connect it to other letters when they're put together.

This letter was animal forward. Originally I had the blue striped world in the center of the C, with Newfoundland featured, but it was a bit busy looking. Instead I subbed in a moose, because Moose.

I messed up a little when drawing the moose, and at first it looked like a bad after school special about demon moose, then I got the eye fixed and she looks ok. I did almost accidentally draw a male moose.

The other animal is of course the Cod, with his little bottle of Screech. I was surprised at how easy it was to draw the cod that size, I'm always surprised at how easy it is to draw fish. They always seem like they're going to be complicated and then I sit down and it's dead simple.

The hard thing on here to draw was the phone. I decided to go with the phone and the computer, because the feeling of being disconnected is prevalent through the whole musical, and the first song either of us listened to from Come From Away was Phoning Home. We tried to add tiny words to the computer screen to say “I am here” but it wouldn't quite fit.

Going into the words, we wanted to keep this one short, because there wasn't a lot of space, so we went with I'm an islander. There was a fairly large debate about doing stripes on a letter next to a letter that already had stripes, but as you can see we ended up deciding to go with it.

This letter does have the tiniest amount of backstitch, just on the white part of the plane so that it'll be visible against a white background. If your fabric is a different color, the outline isn't strictly necessary.
