Tamora Pierce Bookmark Design Insights - Release 4

This bookmark was inspired by Tris, from the Circle of Magic books. I love Tris, because I felt a lot like her as a teenager. I wanted to be left alone with my books and not bothered.

The design on hers is a bit more abstract than Sandry's was, we wanted to portray her magic but as her magic is with weather it was a little more difficult to find a way to make it outline the bookmark and leave room for wording. We ended up taking inspiration from some of the book covers that show her working with blue lightning, and some gray to represent the winds she calls.

The quote was easy, as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one that we had to use for her!

Freebie Tamora Pierce Bookmark SAL Release 3 - Design Insights

I really loved putting this bookmark together, because the Immortals series is one of my all time favorites that Tamora Pierce has written. I love the way Daine grows throughout the series. She goes from being a kid to being a young woman throughout the four books and you really do see that reflected in terms of her thought processes, relationships with others, and general maturity. She's not perfect by any means, but she tries her hardest to make things better for the people and animals around her.

These ones really called to me as a kid because I loved animals so much, I used to wish that I had the ability that Daine does to speak with them, but unfortunately those abilities never developed. It's probably for the best though, because if I could talk to animals I probably wouldn't talk to people much!

This design is the badger claw that Daine was given in the first book, and wears throughout the series. It was designed after some of the cover art, as well as descriptions from the book. The quote I just really liked, and it fits Daine really well.

The next bookmark will be from the Emelan world again! Can't wait to see everyone's updates on their bookmarks!

Broadway SAL - Release 6 Design Insights

We're on the last three releases! I think everyone who guessed on this one guessed correctly that it was Wicked, even from pretty far out. With Galinda's bubble in it and all of the elements from different sections coming together I think this might be the busiest letter on the piece.

Wicked was the second or third letter we did, because it was very clear from the voting early on that it would make it in. It was also one of the more difficult graphic wise. It was also probably my least favorite to work on despite how happy I was with how it turned out. The hat and broom were simple enough both to pick and draw, but we went back and forth on the big graphic to put in the back, because we knew we wanted one there. We handed on the bubble (as opposed to the face of Oz or the dragon clock) and I think I must have drawn it three times before we were happy with it. At which point the computer crashed without me having saved. It turned out for the best, as I liked the fourth best, but I had to walk away from it for several hours after that.

There was no debate about the color of the letter of course. As for the lyrics we were between No One Mourns the Wicked and Defying Gravity. While we love both songs we ended up going with the first both because it fit in better and because we liked that it was the fist song in the show.

As we couldn't fit the whole W into this release (I know, it bothers me as well, but it is the biggest letter in the piece) you don't get as much of a hint of the next letter yet. However I will give you the hint that you can already see elements coming over from it and have been able to since the D.
